ASTRA

audiovisual creation by Sophie Le Meillour and Julie Semoroz

ASTRA

ASTRA is an audiovisual creation commissioned by the Astronomical Society of Geneva to celebrate the institution's 100th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, astrophysicist Yaël Nazé presented her work at a special evening event, which ended with the work ASTRA by artists Sophie Le Meillour (visuals) and Julie Semoroz (music).

This composition was presented in an audiovisual mapping projection on the interior façade of the Salle Communale de Plainpalais (Pitoëff) during the Créatives festival in November 2023.

In this audiovisual work designed specifically for the interior façade of Pitoeff, the artists have sought to give a distinct character to each species of planet, whether real, newly discovered or purely imaginary. In doing so, they have created an interplay of scales designed to express the void and its expanse, as well as gravitational forces and weightlessness, creating an experience that verges almost on vertigo.

ASTRA highlights the temporality of the universe by using contrasts between light and dark, evoking an interstellar wind with its variations in temperature. This creates a kind of dialogue between life and death, while exploring the process leading to the birth of massive stars.

The artist Sophie Le Meillour invites the public to immerse themselves in a living cosmos, inviting them to explore what she defines as "the cells of the universe". Her work, situated between the microcosm and the macrocosm, explores the interstices between real and virtual matter. She offers a world in perpetual metamorphosis, where diverse textures and materials come to life through her many artistic creations. For this particular work, her inspiration comes from the works published by SAG and the research of Yaël Nazé. The artist uses drawing, video and painting, skilfully blending them together.

To complete her research, she invited sound artist Julie Semoroz to create a bespoke composition. The artist used mainly sounds from field recordings she had made during her many travels. Many of the sounds and frequencies in the ASTRA piece come from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), of which ESO is a partner. ALMA is a network of receivers and antennas that pick up waves from the universe. By measuring these waves, astrophysicists are trying to reveal the formation of stars and distant galaxies, right up to the origin of planets and the building blocks of life. The artist has also used freely available sounds from NASA, including earthquakes recently recorded on Mars and various sounds from space missions.

ASTRA

  • Julie Semoroz is singer, sound artist and head of artistic projects. Semoroz shapes sound using several sources such as field recordings, live microphones and her own voice with software and hardware. She offers sound pieces like inner journeys into the subconscious that penetrate into the darkness. Her work focuses on people’s individual relationship with mechanical and organic time. Her creations address new technologies and our post-industrial consumerist society. In her ecology-based research, in the sense of “habitat”, Julie Semoroz raises the question of how to experience our bodies and lives in the society.

  • Sophie Le Meillour is an independent transmedia visual artist. Born in 1988 in Toulouse, she grew up on the Breton doormat. At 18, she studied for 2 years in Paris, before moving to Geneva in 2009.

► Digital art and textures inspired by the natural world are at the heart of her universe. Her work challenges traditional artistic dichotomies: organic vs. artificial and analog art vs. digital.

► She experiences the prism of the image; from line to movement, from small to large, from flat to volume, she plays with scales, spaces and architecture. Her creations can take the form of drawings, photos, videos, installations, virtual reality and even ceramics. She develops an immersive and dreamlike work of her own, which she confronts and likes to tie to the work of other artists and performing arts disciplines.

► A graduate of HEAD in visual communication, she explores the different layers of our aesthetic perception of the living world, collects images here and during her travels, which she then transforms into an original visual experiences.

► With her video projection, Sophie has performed in many countries such as in Ecuador, Chile, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Turkey, Netherlands, Kenya, Tanzania, USA.
